How Biden Clipped Sanders on Race
Seth Adler | counterpunch.org | 2020-04-30
After the South Carolina loss to Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders' opponents effectively used the African American vote against him. The political moves that clipped his chances of winning, revolved around the following opportunistic argument: because Sanders ran a campaign with a racial justice and anti-racist approach that lost to huge African American majorities, how could…

Intel Drop: CV Perspectives and Revisions

We are losing around 1000 per day now, down from a high of over 3000. The US averaged 250 a day in combat deaths in World War 2. But the number counts have entered the Alice in Wonderland world. | [ Jim Dean Note: We were at 50,000 ten days ago in Gordon's NEO on the topic, and yet my regular source, www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ , has been showing 2300 and 2400 dead in the last two days but with a 61,656 total for the US as of PM US EST. One would assume they would be tracking each other's numbers to spot anomalies, but they aren't. So the big question is why not? | It also means 75,000 dead, just b…

[Comment] Reducing malaria transmission with reactive focal interventions
Manuel W Hetzel, Nakul Chitnis | thelancet.com | 2020-04-25
A massive scale-up of investments in malaria control resulted in an estimated 663 million lives saved in sub-Saharan Africa between 2000 and 2015,1 and 11 countries have been certified malaria-free in the current millennium.2 Unfortunately, progress has stalled recently, and increases in malaria incidence were observed in several endemic countries.3 Continuing with business as usual is likely to jeopardise gains made in the past 20 years, and slow the progress towards elimination goals. Innovative and targeted measures are required to complement universal coverage with basic vector control and case management int…

[Commentary] SARS-CoV-2 pandemic expanding in sub-Saharan Africa: Considerations for COVID-19 in people living with HIV
Paul K. Drain, Nigel Garrett | thelancet.com | 2020-04-21
In December 2019, a novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, started a global pandemic of respiratory illness, termed COVID-19 [1]. The spectrum of COVID-19 has ranged from a mild, self-limiting respiratory tract illness to severe progressive pneumonia, multi-organ failure, and death [2]. Older patients and those with a weaker immune system appear to have a greater risk of death [3]. Thus far, the vast majority of deaths from COVID-19 have occurred in Italy, China, Iran, and Spain–all Northern hemisphere countries with good health care resources and a low HIV prevalence.
